Places to go & things to do near The Den and Orchard

There’s plenty to keep campers and families entertained within just a few miles of our peaceful holiday park in the village of Tytherington, Somerset.

Here’s a small selection of things to discover on our doorstep – please ask us for more when you come to stay with us!

Explore Frome (pronounced f-r-o-o-m)

Soak up the atmosphere, enjoy the café culture and shop in the independent artisanal stores of this quirky Somerset town, awash with art and history. Every first Sunday of the month there’s a huge street market taking over the town, where you can enjoy local produce, crafts and clothing and a veritable feast of street food. The local independent cinema shows the latest releases for a great price.

On safari at Longleat

Take a boat or bus safari, drive by the lion’s den, have a stately house tour, ride the railway, walk with the animals, get lost in the maze – there’s so much to do at Lord & Lady Bath’s magnificent home and grounds that we’re sure you’ll have to visit more than once.

Nunney Castle

An extremely well-preserved moated medieval castle, dating from the 1370s, is a dramatic surprise in the picturesque village of Nunney (BA11 4LW). It costs nothing to explore, and there’s a great pub and tearoom right alongside where you can fuel your inner knight.

Cley Hill – the UFO Hotspot

Perfect for stargazing at night, and enjoying breathtaking views during the day, it’s worth the walk up to the Iron Age hillfort atop this archaeologically and geologically significant hill – which also just so happens to be an unofficial UFO observatory famed among alien craft spotters.

Casting for Carp

The Shearwater Lake Fishery is famous among anglers not just for its stocks of carp, but also predator pike and perch to get to grips with. If you want to give it a go you need to book in advance online.

Walking & cycling

The local scenery is best enjoyed on foot or bicycle, so get your boots on or hop in the saddle and set off exploring. Click here for some ideas for set walks curated by The Ramblers in our area. If you’re travelling on two wheels, try a route suggested by komoot.com.

Attractions within 30 minutes of your camping grounds

If you feel inclined to travel a little further afield during your stay at our Somerset campsite you’ll be spoilt for choice.

These day trips are a “must” to add to your itinerary:

Wookey Hole (20 miles)

An underground adventure awaits in the Wookey Hole Caves carved out of the Mendip Hills over millions of years. Venture to the Enchanted Valley and Dinosaur Grove where reality and fantasy entwine. Play a round of pirate-themed Adventure Golf, immerse yourself in the 4D cinema …. the fun just goes on and on!

The City of Bath (15 miles)

Fall under the spell of this spa city that was built for pleasure by the Georgians. Visit the ancient Roman Baths and the famed city Spa, take an open-top bus sightseeing tour, soak in the hot spring water, dine in style and indulge in some seriously sophisticated shopping.

Stonehenge (22 miles)

Visit the magical, mystical stone circle that has become a well-known wonder of the world. Standing on Salisbury Plain the iconic circle of megaliths will have you reaching for your camera, and the on-site Neolithic village and exhibition is truly fascinating.

Stourhead (10 miles)

One of the gems in the National Trust collection, the Palladian house at Stourhead has an intriguing history, inspirational art and a noteworthy collection of furniture. It’s the 1,072 hectare landscaped grounds, however, that draw thousands of visitors here every year to revel in the beauty and tranquillity created as a “living work of art” in the 18th century by Henry Hoare II.

This is just a sample of the wonders Somerset and Wiltshire have in store for you when you visit The Den and Orchard. We look forward to pointing you in the direction of many more varied attractions, from seaside towns to heritage railways; canal cruises to Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm; the Fleet Air Arm Museum and a ski slope!
